Grandma Barbara’s Burgers

My mother never went wrong with her burgers. Serve them straight on a bun or add tons of your favorite toppings. The sky’s the limit with Barbara’s burgers!

  • 8 ounces Angus ground beef

  • 1 slice beefsteak tomato
  • 2 tablespoons onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon shallots, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 slice of cheese
  • 1 slice pickle
  • 3 leaves iceberg lettuce
  • 1 Kaiser roll, lightly toasted
  • 1 tablespoon special sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 slices of crispy bacon
  • Special sauce:
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Juice of one lemon

  1. Form one large burger patty from the ground beef.
  2. Place the patty in a very hot skillet or grill pan and cook for 3 – 5 minutes on each side or to your desired cooking temperature. (I prefer a medium rare burger.)
  3. Top with cheese while cooking. Let cheese melt then remove the patty and place on a plate. Cover with foil and let rest.
  4. Add oil to a small sauté pan over medium heat. Add chopped shallots and sliced onions and cook for 5-10 minutes. Remove and drain on a paper towel.
  5. Toast roll.
  6. Assemble your burger with the bun, burger, cheese, shallots, onions, and remaining toppings.
  7. Combine mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice to make the special sauce. Can be made ahead of time and refrigerated.
  8. Spread the special sauce on bottom bun and squeeze a little ketchup on top bun. Enjoy.
